Power Plant to Close in 2012 August 2011, Old Town. The City of Alexandria and GenOn Energy reached an agreement to permanently close the Potomac River Generating Station by October 1, 2012 (unless the plant is needed beyond that date for a limited period for reliability purposes). The plant has been operating since 1949, providing power to PEPCO customers in Washington, D.C., but not to Dominion Virginia Power customers in Northern Virginia. The lyrics to Steam's 1969 number one pop single and favorite college fight song, Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye, come readily to mind and lips. See yeah! Katherine Cross June 2011, Old Town. Katherine Cross, a founding member of the Gardens/Landscape Committee and recent Association President, sold her home at Watergate to move to Arlington. We thank you for your leadership and dedication to our community, and will miss your friendship and wise counsel. Duane McClay February 2011, Old Town. Long-time Watergate homeowner and resident Duane McClay passed away in mid-February 2011. All our best wishes go out to his surviving wife, Eileen. Mirant Power Plant The following story was reported in the August 26, 2010 edition of the Alexandria Gazette Packet: "Residents in North Old Town will notice a new feature on the landscape later this year -- a 30 foot windscreen to protect neighbors from breathing fugitive dust. Next year, Atlanta-based Mirant plans to install new "baghouse" technology that will suck particulates out of the air similar to the way a vacuum cleaner works. Both improvements are part of a $34 million settlement reached between Mirant and city officials back in 2008." Too bad the city didn't win its lawsuit to close the facility. Robin and Quentin Roggenkamp August 3, 2010, Old Town. This news in from guest correspondent Lynne Lyboldt: "Most folks know our former neighbors, Robin and Quentin Roggekamp (aka, the police officer) who recently moved to a larger home because they were expecting twins in November. Unfortunately, the girls, Avery Rose and Seinna Grace, were born 17 weeks prematurely on July 26th. They both weighed just over a pound and, as you can imagine, are in the NICU fighting for their lives daily and sometimes hourly. Every minute is a miracle. Robin and Quinten need all the support they can get, and Avery and Seinna need all the prayers they can get. They have a website (<— click on this link) where folks can go for information, updates and communication. It is hard for Robin and Quentin to talk to everyone as most of their time is spent at the hospital. I know it would help them a great deal to get support from all their friends here at Watergate. Their new address is 125 Harvard Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314." Thanks, Lynne! Sam Markman July 13, 2010, Old Town. Long-time Watergate homeowner, Board member and President Sam Markman sold his home in the Northern Mews on September 12th and moved with his wife, Diane, to the Eastern Shore.
